Just a silly thing

I was speaking to a friend. I had just watched their short film production. A great piece that obviously took hard work.

Their phrase towards the end, it was just a silly thing.

He was obviously using humour to soften something, maybe pride, embarrassment. whatever it was, his phrase got me thinking.

If I could go back in time I would say....

"silly thing. Curious, I never hear bankers or hedge fund managers remark about their work as silly things. Even though they may gain great wealth from backing arms companies or uranium mining companies. They never seem to feel the need to justify themselves or downplay their acts.

And yet here you remark upon your work as a silly little thing.

as if the precision, thought, expertise and execution of the production were just 'silly things'.

and yet here you are, leaning into artistry, leaning into creating a peice of work that you set free for anyone to watch. Like Henrietta Lacks cells, without copyright and so pivotal to the advancement of so much of medicinal advances. Artistry that smudges the line of production, alters our reason for being and doing. what a brilliant revolution to the mediocre cowering that so much of capitalism demands.

This is not a silly thing, this is revolution baby'!

As I say I would need a Time Machine. When he said the phrase I just smiled and moved the conversation on.
